What is Last.fm?

Last.fm is a social music community that keeps you in touch with your music using a music recommendation system called “Audioscrobbler”, Last.fm builds a detailed profile of each user’s musical taste by recording details of all the songs the user listens to, either on the streamed radio stations or on the user’s computer or some portable music devices. This information is transferred to Last.fm’s database (”scrobbled”) via a plugin installed into the user’s music player. The profile data is then displayed on the user’s profile page. What you may not know about Last.fm

Last.fm has a great piece of software for your computer that will recognize your favorite music player, plug in to it, and track the music you listen to.  Over time the music that Last.fm tracks will help determine new music that you are interested in.  Last.fm will compare each artist with other artists in the system based off of what users are listening to.  Example, say I listen to Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, and Hinder, another users listens to Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, and Seether.  Based off of Last.fm’s analysis, you can conclude that listeners of Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace like Seether and Hinder.  So now Last.fm can recommend me Seether and the other listener Hinder.  See how that works?  Want to discover new music based off of what you are listening to?  Download Last.fm’s audioscrobbler and discover new music.

What is Wordpress?

Wordpress is an open source blogging platform that allows you to build websites/blogs in the matter of minutes.  Wordpress has a strong community of developers which puts Wordpress on the forefront of simple, professional website building.  It couldn’t be any easier to build a website, than with Wordpress.  The community has collections of thousand of themes (change the look and feel of your site) free for download.  The community also has thousands of plugins (adds additional functionalality, such as shopping carts, advertisement, contact forms, and more) free for download.  All of this can be found on Wordpress.org.  To find the themes and plugins, check out http://www.wordpress.org/extend.

What you may not know about Wordpress

Literally anyone can build a Wordpress site in one sitting.  It’s so easy I put this quick video together for you below, starting with the very basics.  I walk you step by step, from the beginning on how you can get a website up with Wordpress.  You can build any type of website with Wordpress, whether it be a e-commerce (sell products), membership, blog, download, forum, or any other site you can think of, Wordpress can do.  It’s time to start thinking of Wordpress outside of it’s blogging roots.  (I plan in the future to create a post, outlining further details on how you can create Wordpress for a whole plethora of different type of sites, stay tuned).  For now, here’s a video of me installing Wordpress…

What is Woot?

Woot’s tagline is “One Day, One Deal”. Generally, Woot offers one product per day until its stock of that item is sold out or the product is replaced at midnight Central Time with the next offering. If a product sells out during its run, the next item still does not appear until midnight, except during Woot-Offs. Products are never announced beforehand.  Customers normally may buy up to three of the day’s item, although occasionally the site has limited product quantity to one per customer.  Woot does not reveal sales figures unless the item sells out.  (read more at Wikipedia)

What you may not know about Woot

Woot.com has other sites which sell one product at time.  Shirt.Woot and Wine.Woot are 2 other sites by Woot.  Shirt.woot.com features 1 shirt a day (typically designed by the Woot community, known as “Derbys”).  Shirt.woot shirts at $10 with free shipping.  Wine.woot.com features 1 wine or a set of wines once  a week, instead of Woot’s signature, once a day.  You must be 21 to make a Wine.Woot purchase and it is not available in all states.  Finally Woot also has a partnership with Yahoo! Shopping in which they feature 1 product a day for sale a very low price.  You can see this site at Sellout.Woot.com.

What is Wine Library TV?

Winelibrary TV (WLTV) (2006-present) is a video podcast hosted by Gary Vaynerchuk, featuring wine reviews and advice on wine appreciation. Episodes consists of wine tastings along with other wine related topics. The show debuted on February 21, 2006, and is produced on a daily basis, on weekdays, and is taped in the Wine Library store in Springfield, NJ. Episodes taped Monday through Thursday take place on a desk in Vaynerchuk’s office, normally tasting three or four wines, and the Friday episode takes place on Vaynerchuk’s office couch, tasting usually only one wine and answering questions submitted via his Facebook application Ask Gary. What you may not know you can do with Wine Library TV

You can get instant reviews and user reviews about each wine tasted in the episodes.  Since March 2007, Wine Library TV has been tagging their videos with the exact time that Gary starts to talk about a particular wine.  Listed underneath each video is a section called “Wines tasted in this episode“, by clicking Play to the right of the wine, it will quickly jump right to Gary’s review of that wine.  Want to see more reviews about that particular wine?  Click review at Cork’d and you’ll get reviews from other wine aficionado’s across the internet.

What is Digg?

Digg is a website made for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the Internet, by submitting links and stories, and voting and commenting on submitted links and stories. Voting stories up and down is the site’s cornerstone function, respectively called digging and burying. Many stories get submitted every day, but only the most Dugg stories appear on the front page. What you may not know you can do with Digg

Did you know that you can use Digg to get the latest content about a particular subject?  Digg has custom RSS feeds based on search.  This means if you want to know anytime something is added to Digg about Nintendo Wii you can build a custom RSS feed based on the search “Nintendo Wii”.  With the custom RSS feed you can add it to your favorite news aggregator.
